Why should you care about rings Allows you to efficiently validate our software against your environment Rings provide a containment mechanism to isolate and assess risk Proven strategy relied on by services to support deploying releases quicker and at lower cost With early validation, Microsoft can address issues before releases go out broadly Allow Enterprises to protect the majority of mission critical devices by allowing a represented sample of their devices to pilot prior to rolling it out to the general population

Definitions Release An official production build which has been released in a channel (e.g. Windows 10 Version 1703, Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus Version 1703) Channel Stream of releases which happen at a predictable cadence, such as Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted) or Semi-Annual Channel Ring A set of machines assigned (subscribed) to a channel. Machines may or may not be on the most current build in a channel depending on throttling, network connectivity, etc.
