SUBFIELDS III. SUBFIELDS/(Careers) A.BASIC RESEARCH pure knowledge aimed to increase psychology’s knowledge base. 1.Biological Psychologists- explores link between physical brain & mind People who go into psychology are a very diverse group of people with wide-ranging interests. There are many subfields of psychology, for many different types of people who love psychology - with the one underlying goal uniting them: to describe and explain behavior and the mind underlying it. Some psychologist do BASIC Research - aimed at discovering or investigating our mental processes and behavior Basically research for the sake of learning. Some of the following are such researchers. Biological psych - how brain controls behavior, mental disorders, genetics. cognitive - sensation & perception, memory, problem solving ***Video of baby morphing into an old man has no sound. 2.Developmental Psychologists- changes from womb to tomb 3.Cognitive Psychologists- experiments how we perceive, think & solve probs SUBFIELDS Careers

SUBFIELDS III. SUBFIELDS/(Careers) investigate our persistent traits 4. Personality Psychologists investigate our persistent traits 5. Social Psychologists- explores how people influence one another Personality Psych develop personality tests, look for personality traits that may contribute to a person’s ethics, likelihood of breaking the law, etc. Social Psych. - prejudice, group or mob behavior. Industrial - improve efficiency, productivity, & satisfaction of workers. They work on better working conditions for employees, they work at getting more worker output from employees. They may devise psychological tests for job applicants - and help employees who may be having problems on the job. 6. Industrial/Organizational Psychologists- study & advise on behavior in the workplace SUBFIELDS Careers

Counseling Psychologists- help people w/challenges-vocational, marriage Both Counseling and clinical psychologist administer and interpret tests, provide counseling and therapy, and sometimes conduct basic and applied research. By Contrast, Clinical Psychiatrist do the same, but are medical doctors who can prescribe drugs. In 2002, New Mexico granted the right to specially trained and licensed psychologist to do the same. Many states have been moving in that direction. 2. Clinical Psychologists- treat mental, emotional & behavioral disorders SUBFIELDS Careers

Ex: extreme temperature, noise Consumer - study behavior of shoppers to explain & predict behavior School Psychologist - help students w/problems learning By Contrast, Clinical Psychiatrist do the same, but are medical doctors who can prescribe drugs. In 2002, New Mexico granted the right to specially trained and licensed psychologist to do the same. School Psych• concerned w/helping students who may have learning disabilities. Also give achievement & intelligence tests. Educational Psych - Focus on course planning & teaching methods for a school system rather than individual students. Environmental - Does being in an overcrowded school - a school that is made for 2600 students but now has over 4,000 make you guys irritable? Does Las Vegas’ 125º heat make people irritable in the summer? How about the smog? Environmental Psychs investigate the effects environment has on people. Consumer - Have you ever noticed that in the supermarkets, that the milk is shelved far away from the store entrance? Even though it’s an item that people buy the most. - Casino Bathrooms - They study behavior of shoppers to explain and predict behavior Forensic - they work in the justice system. Testify whether a person is sane to stand trial, help hire cops, help them deal with the stress, and train to handle suicide threats, hostage crisis and family violence SUBFIELDS Careers
