Key strategies for reducing food waste 1. Understanding the issue Measuring how much food waste there is, of what types, and where and why it arises. 2. Raise awareness And that it can be addressed – amongst consumers and the food and drink supply chain 3. Set goals or targets Linked to broader strategic aims Tied to monitoring and reporting mechanisms
Key strategies – developed countries Action 1 Supporting the establishment of independent organisations which can facilitate and evaluate collaborative efforts to reduce food waste across the entire supply chain Action 2 Developing waste prevention plans, addressing policy and regulatory barriers Action 3 Developing collective action programmes to reduce food waste in businesses (especially grocery and hospitality). Action 4 Addressing specific issues (e.g. pack & portion size control, date labelling) Action 5 Developing consumer engagement campaigns.
Key strategies – developing countries Action 1 Investing in sustainable infrastructure that can connect farmers to markets Action 2 Helping to coordinate food production, storage and distribution activities Action 3 Focusing on perishable products, particularly in warmer and more humid climates Action 4 Setting up and supporting consumer food waste prevention campaigns, particularly in emerging cities with fast-growing middle class populations Action 5 Evaluating how the actions of developed nations can influence food waste in developing ones, and taking steps to mitigate against this
