WELCOME TO LIFE SCIENCE! Mrs. Hartley Summit Hill Junior High 2017-2018

Introduction: *Welcome, I am Mrs. Hartley and will be your child’s 7th grade science teacher this year. *14th year at Summit Hill Junior High School *Married with 3 Children *Biology Major at U.I.C. *Masters at University of Phoenix *NGSS *http://ngss.nsta.org/About.aspx *Hobbies: Searching for new ideas to foster the love of science and spending time with my family – reading, crafting, and sports.

WHAT IS IN STORE FOR 7TH GRADE SCIENCE? LAB SAFETY LAB EQUIPMENT METRIC SYSTEM SCIENTIFIC METHOD LIFE SCIENCE PBL – Problem Based Learning – In place of Science Fair for academic level science classes – THIS YEAR: “GLOBAL WARMING” INTEGRATION OF NGSS – Next Generation Science Standards

WHAT ARE NGSS – Next generation science standards? NGSS – Next Generation Science Standards are a new approach to look at science. It is exploring! It is asking the questions of “Why or How this occurs?” Students are engaged in science labs and making connections to the world. Asking questions is a practice and that is what we want students to do. We want them to go out there and discover! NGSS Performance Expectations LS1-1. Conduct an investigation to provide evidence that living things are made of cells, either one cell or many different numbers and types of cells. LS1-2. Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function. LS1-3. Use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting subsystems composed of groups of cells.

WELCOME TO LIFE SCIENCE! What is Life Science? a branch of science (as biology, medicine, and sometimes anthropology or sociology) that deals with living organisms and life processes. ANIMAL AND PLANT CELL – Parts and functions ECOSYSTEMS – How organisms react with their environment? PHOTOSYNTHESIS – How do plants make their own food? ANIMAL BEHAVIOR/ANIMAL REPRODUCTION

Plants and animals PLANTS ANIMALS PHOTOSYNTHESIS – How plants make their own food? What structures are needed to produce their own food? PLANTS PROCESSES ANIMALS AND BEHAVIOR ANIMAL REPRODUCTION

pbl for this year is… This year our PBL – Problem Based Learning will be centered around how to save our polar bears. PROBLEM: Global Warming is eliminating our icebergs and in turn food supply for our polar bears. GOAL: To come up with a solution to help this dilemma. DESIGN: Students will design their own iceberg made of biodegradeable materials to hold 25 grams of weight and be able to float in a pool of water. RESEARCH PAPER + ICE BERG = MORE TO COME IN SCIENCE CLASSES!

LOOKING FORWARD TO A GREAT YEAR! Thank you so much for coming to Curriculum Night this year at Summit Hill Junior High School. Looking forward to a wonderful year in science. Contact information: shartley@summithill.org 815-469-4330
