Sutton’s Green Mission To identify and implement energy efficiencies to reduce Town operating costs, along with educating the Town to create a greener community.

Sutton’s Green Strategy Establish Goal of becoming an Energy Star Community Establish an Energy Efficiency Committee Collect baseline data Establish measurement system Develop ways to reduce energy consumption Educate train implement Measure, evaluate and readjust Community Outreach

Energy Star Community Make a goal of reducing energy consumption In Town buildings by 10%. Application must be completed by Town Measure and track energy consumption (portfolio manager)

Sutton’s Cost of Energy Department Electricity Heat Fuel Central Purchasing $128,752 Public Buildings $39,854 $27,750 Fire $3,787 $8,054 Street Lights $17,498 Highway $3,387 $2,417 Schools $198,423 $267,150 Sewer $42,144 $8,500 Senior Center $5,772 $8,532 _____________ Totals: $310,395 $322,403

10% Reduction 10% of $761,550 $76,155

Some Recent Examples Replaced all exit signs to LED Replaced Gazebo lights on common with CFLs-replaced 16-90 watt bulbs with 16 watt bulbs Planning on the replacement of Town boilers Remove Vending machine Town hall-3,500 KWh/yr. Schools replaced all exit signs with LEDs Both Schools and Town underwent Energy audits last winter.

Measure Establish energy use baseline Track through system (portfolio manager) Implement changes Continue to evaluate impact through measurement

Energy Efficiency Committee Recommend formation of Ad-hoc committee made up of Town employees, school employees and residents to advise, seek savings, and help educate the community on energy conservation.

Green Communities Act Passed by MA spring 2008 Eligible communities get access to grants and loans through State (funded at $10mm/year) Reduce energy use by 20% in town buildings over 5 years Purchase fuel efficient vehicles when practicable As of right siting for renewable of alternative energy facilities as designated by town. Adopt a streamlined permitting to site such facilities

Next Steps State Green Communities Act Green Buildings/LEED Energy alternatives-Solar, wind
