Presentation transcript:

Layout of Tools Tools must be laid out in definite order. Place the files on the right hand side and the marking out tools on the left hand side. This will protect all the tools from damage.

Marking out Tools Scriber Steel ruler Spring Dividers Try square Odd leg calipers

Tools Hammer Centre punch Chisel All types of files Hacksaw Junior hacksaw

Scriber

Scriber Used for drawing lines on metal Made of high carbon steel Points are ground to an angle of 30° There are different types of scriber available, single pointed or double pointed The bent end is for areas that are not accessible with the straight end

Steel Rule

Steel Rule Engineers rule are available in various lengths, common types are 150mm and 300mm Whenever possible the rule should be used on its edge Care must be taken not to damage the edge of the rule

Engineers Try Square

Engineers Try Square Made of 2 parts, a stock and a blade, which are at right angles to each other. A small grove is cut in the stock at the inner corner to avoid burred edges. Used to draw lines at right angles to a straight edge. Checking right angles with the inside and outside of the square.

Centre Punch

Centre Punch The centre punch is used for making marks for the point of spring dividers and to mark the position of holes. The centre punch should be tilted at an angle to position the point accurately. Centre punches are made from high carbon steel. The points are hardened and tempered and ground to angles of 60° or 90°.

Centre Punch Sometimes separate punches are used to mark, or dot lines and to mark the position of holes. The one used to dot lines is called a dot punch and is ground to an angle of 60°. A centre punch is used to mark the centre for holes and the point is ground to an angle of 90°. Dot punches are used to identify lines.

Spring Dividers

Spring Dividers The dividers is used for drawing circles and arcs on metal. Also used for transferring measurements from one piece to another. The dividers can be set by adjusting the nut until the points fit into the required graduations on the rule.

Spring Dividers There are two types of dividers, the spring type and the firm joint type. The spring type is the most widely used. The size of the dividers is given by the length from the centre of the roller to the point of the leg. The legs are made from tool steel with hardened points. The legs must be the same length.

Odd Leg Callipers

Odd Leg Callipers One leg is either curved at the top or has a locating spur. The other leg has a scriber attached to it. The Odd Leg Callipers is used for- Scribing a line parallel to a straight edge Scribing a line on a round bar on the lathe

Bevel

Bevel Sometimes called a bevel gauge or a bevel square. A bevel is used for marking out or measuring angles. It can be set using a protractor. It is locked in position using the clamping screw.

Centre Square

Centre Square The centre square is used to locate the centre of a round bar or disc. Two lines are drawn on the end of the bar and the intersection of these lines gives the centre.

Drill Gauge

Drill Gauge A drill gauge is used for checking drill sizes when the markings on the drill shanks have become unclear.

Combination Set

Combination Set This consists of a rule and 3 different heads, which can be attached to it. A square head used for marking out and testing right angles and 45° angles. A protractor head, for testing and marking out any angle. A centre head for locating the centres of round bars.

Hacksaw

Hacksaw Available with either adjustable or non-adjustable frames and with various types of handles. Adjustable frames can take blades of different lengths. The blade is tensioned by the wing nut. Care must be taken when fitting new blades to have the teeth pointing forward.
