Rewards & Consequences Brag Tag: *Your child can earn a Brag Tag for many many things. It’s for positive reinforcement. Brag Tag Necklaces are to stay in the classroom. At the end of the year your child can take them home. *If a child is misbehaving I will first warn the child and have a quick chat explaining what they are doing wrong and how they can fix it. *If a child continues to misbehave I will call/email his or her parents and possibly refer the child to the office.
Accelerated Reader (AR) AR is a computerized program that tests reading comprehensionStudents select books on their reading level, read independently, and take an independent comprehension test on the computer Each book is worth a certain number of points based on its length and reading level. There are class rewards based on number of points earned and comprehension percentages Kids can move reading levels throughout the year as their skills progress. Kids can read for AR at home (reading log minutes) and bring in their book, or the title of the book, and then take quizzes in class. This keeps the kids motivated to read at school and at home. Not all books are AR books. To see if a book is AR, please go to AR Book FinderScholastic Book Club offers AR books and the levels are printed in the monthly magazines.
Rainbow Words Welcome to Rainbow Words! Rainbow words come from the first grade sight word list. These words need to be practiced every night (in addition to the Fundations spelling words). Through repeated exposure and practice of the words, your child should be able to say each word as soon as he/she sees it, without hesitation. The repetition of the words will increase reading fluency and accelerate reading levels. Once your child can identify the words to me on two separate occasions, with NO HESITATION, your child will be given a new set of words to study (we will test kids on Tuesday and Thursday). The first set of words is on red paper. The following sets will be orange, yellow, green, blue, pink, purple, white, ivory and gray. It is expected that all children will read through all of the rainbow colors by the end of the year. The words need to come back and forth to school every day, in their green take home folder. Please help your child keep track of his/her words, and remember to practice them every night! You will be amazed at the difference it will make in your child’s reading!
