INFORMATION ON BULLYING Bullying is thought to be the most common form of violence suffered by children. Recently, the internet has been used to promote bullying activities , which doesn’t allow any escape for its victims, not even at home. Bullying usually involves a bully, a victim and a witness. Witnesses are just as responsible as the bully for the bullying activity.

INFORMATION ON BULLYING Bullying can include saying or writing inappropriate things about a person, deliberately excluding individuals from activities, threatening or actually hurting a person, making a person do something against their will and teasing.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BULLYING Bullying seems to peak in middle school and then decline in high school. Approximately 7% of 8th graders miss at least 1 day of school each month because they are afraid of being bullied. Every year more than 160,000 students report missing some school because they are afraid to attend due to bullying activities.

WHO IS A BULLY? 1. A person who doesn’t care if bad things happen to other people. A person who doesn’t feel bad when others are hurt. A person who likes to be the center of attention. A person who believes others deserve to be bullied. A person who is bullied at home by their parents or siblings.

WHY DO STUDENTS BULLY? 1. To gain power. 2. To get attention or become popular. To get material things. 4. They act out due to problems at home. 5. To copy another person.

WHAT TYPE OF PERSON IS OFTEN TARGETED BY BULLIES? 1. Students who are smaller. Students who don’t have many friends. Students who don’t stick up for themselves or get help from an adult. Most anybody, if they think they can get away with it.

WHAT ARE SOME EFFECTS OF BEING BULLIED? 1. Feeling scared, alone, and sad. Don’t like school. Get headaches and stomachaches. Not feeling good about themselves.

WHAT HAPPENS TO A STUDENT WHO BULLIES ANOTHER STUDENT? The Department of Education’s Discipline Code prohibits this behavior. Students who violate the Discipline Code will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action as outlined in the Citywide Standards and Chancellor’s Regulation A-443.

WHAT HELP IS AVAILABLE FOR VICTIMS OF BULLYING? Every adult is available to assist students who are victims of bullying. Your Dean will insure that appropriate disciplinary actions are given to the bully and witnesses once a report has been made. Your designated counselor is available to provide counseling services, mediation, and follow – up to ensure that the victim feels safe and is no longer being bullied.

BULLYING SURVEY You will be asked to complete an online Bullying Survey in your classrooms in order to assist the Guidance Department in deleting bullying. Once this survey has been completed, each student will receive a prize. For more information contact PrincipalsEssentials.com
