Chaparral Biome

Look at this map and discuss with group what do all these locations have in common

Chaparral Location & Climate Chaparral biomes are usually located close to the oceans and are found in all parts of the world They are characterized by having a Mediterranean climate Moderately dry Coastal climate Little to no rain in the summer Temperatures range from 30 F to 100 F

Plants Most plants are low lying evergreen shrubs and small trees These tend to grow together in dense patches Common plants in chaparral are: Chamise Manzanita scrub oak

What are three things that these plants have in common….

Plant adaptations Plants in the chaparral have small leathery leaves that retain water The leaves also contain oil that promote burning These plants can resprout from very small bits of surviving plant tissue The chaparral biome uses fires to destroy trees that might compete with the chaparral plants

Animals Some animals that live in the chaparral biome include Quail, lizards, chipmunks and mule deer Major adaptation for the animals is similar to the major adaptation in the grassland….. CAMOUFLAGE

Threats to the Chaparral Now that you know a little about the chaparral biome with your group discuss and choose two threats to the chaparral biome You have 1 minute to discuss Be prepared to share

Threats The biggest threat to the biome is human development Since this biome has very moderate temperatures and usually located next to the ocean people want to live there
