Col. Pike Multimodal: About the Project The goal of the Columbia Pike Multimodal Street Improvement Project is to transform this main thoroughfare into a “Complete Street” designed and operated to enable safe, attractive, and comfortable access and travel for all users: Pedestrians Bicyclists Transit riders Motorists In addition to visible improvements to the road, extensive work is occurring below the roadway to replace aging and leak-prone water and sewer pipes and to relocate existing overhead utilities underground.

Proposed Improvements – Design Considerations Balance between pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and vehicle spaces 56-ft street cross section Include left turn lanes/medians Eliminate right turn lanes and bus pull-outs Behind curb line: Wider sidewalks, transit shelters, street trees, planting strips, bicycle accommodations Drainage Utilities Existing overhead lines will be relocated underground Aging underground infrastructure will also be replaced/upgraded Infrastructure upgrades support on-going revitalization of Columbia Pike Additional ROW Requirements

Current Status of the West End (Segment H/I) DESIGN Final plan submission in July 2016 Approval anticipated September 2016 RIGHT-OF-WAY 14 properties requiring easements 6 properties remaining Nearing completion on 5 of the remaining properties Bidding/Notice to Proceed Can’t begin until plans are approved and all permanent easements are acquired Requires Washington Gas relocations to be completed prior to construction. 4-5 months to notice to proceed from release of invitation to bid.
