By Spencer Sosnowski What are Question Words? How and when to use Wer How and when to use WenHow and when to use Was How do I know whether I should use Wer, Wen, or Was?

Question words are words used in the formation of a question. Wer and wen both ask about a person. Wer asks about the subject, whereas WerwenWer Wen asks about the direct object of the sentence.Wen Was asks about objects. Was Menu

Wer should be used when asking about the subject of the sentence. For example, if you needed to ask Who lives in Dresden? you would ask Wer wohnt in Dresden? Answer: Ich wohne in Dresden. Menu

Wen should be used when asking about the direct object of the sentence. The answer will be in Akkusative If you ask Whom do you know? you would ask Wen kennst du? Answer: Ich kenne ihn. Menu

Was is used to ask about inanimate objects, as opposed to wer and wen which ask about people.werwen What are you people buying? Was kauft ihr? Answer: Wir kaufen einen Hund. Using wer or wen here would translate toWho or whom are you people buying? You can see how this would be incorrect.werwen Menu

WerWenWas Wer should be used in place of the English word who. It differs from wen in the same way that who differs from whom. Wen should be used in place of the English wordwhom. It differs from wer in the same way that whom differs from who. Was should be used in place of the English wordwhat. It differs from wen and wer in the same way that what differs from whom and who.
