THURSDAY APRIL 8, 2010 BELL RINGER: WHAT WAS THE NAME OF THE COMPANY WHERE 140 WORKERS DIED IN A FIRE?

PROGRESSIVE SOCIAL REFORM

REFORMING CITY LIFE By 1920, for the 1st time in U.S. history, more than 50% of Americans lives in urban areas. With growth this came problems with garbage collection, safe and affordable housing, health care, police and fire protection, and public education.

CLEANING UP THE CITY Progressives called to make cities more healthful and livable for all residents. Many states began to require one bathroom in each apartment. Many cities created safe places for children to play.

CITY PLANNING City-planning movement grew because progressives believed that cleaner cities would produce better citizens. In 1909 Daniel Burnham produced a plan to redesign Chicago, the 1st of its kind. In turn, Cleveland, San Francisco, and D.C. hired Burnham Helped realize that city planning was necessary for a city government.

MORAL REFORM Progressives wanted to “clean up” immoral behavior. Called for prohibition, or a ban on the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages. Believed that it would reduce crime and the breakup of families. During the Progressive Era, many colleges did not allow student athletes to drink.

MORAL CONT… School textbooks included information on the dangers of alcohol. In 1917 Congress proposed the 18th Amendment, which would bar the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages. It was enacted, but later repealed in 1933. In 1909 the movie industry began to censor itself because progressives believed moviegoing promoted immoral values.

RACIAL DISCRIMINATION Many African Americans and American Indians drew on progressive ideas to develop programs for their communities. W.E.B. Du Bois was a leading African American figure He was the 1st African American to earn a doctorate from Harvard In 1909 Du Bois and a group of African American and white progressives created the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to end racial discrimination.

Americanization American Indians wanted equality as well, but they argued over whether to strengthen their native cultures or assimilate into white American culture. Progressives wanted to Americanize immigrants, or prepare them to become full citizens In schools and public programs immigrants were taught to read, write, and speak English They also learned about U.S. History and government
