Working in OU Live We will use the Emoticons, Step Away, Raise Hand & Tick & Cross functions …and also the mic and Chat Box too !

Welcome Please begin by saying “hello” in the Chat Box so I know you’re all ready to start. Feel free to test your microphone and say hello to everyone TUTOR NOTE: If you’d rather check students can speak and use the microphones, then adjust this slide to your own preferences.

Recording This tutorial will be recorded for those who are not able to attend – does anyone object to being recorded? Please confirm with a green tick ✔ that you consent to the recording being made. TUTOR NOTES Feel free to establish your own working preferences for the session in terms of questions. There are plenty of opportunities to pause for questions, but you may prefer to have students asking questions as they arise. QUESTIONS You may have questions, please note them down as there are question slots during the tutorial, or raise your hand and I’ll come to you when I can.

Purpose of this tutorial Progress so far Time and study planning Prepare for TMA02 Any other issues? ANY QUESTIONS?

Feedback from TMA 01 What should you do with the feedback? Read Have you read both sets of feedback? You should find comments on the script, and a separate summary form (PT3) Reflect Think about the feedback received – do you understand it? Was it what you expected? Why? Plan your next steps What are you going to do differently for the next TMA?

Successful Assessments - What have you learned about completing assessments? What worked well? What are you going to do differently? What gets in the way of doing as much studying as you want to or need to? What tips can you give other students? Gather responses from students by microphone and chat box

Time and Study Planning What gets in the way of doing as much studying as you want to or need to? What tips can you give other students?

What gets in the way of doing as much study as you want or need to do?

Your best tip for completing an assignment

Common problems on TMAs Read the question Ensure that you have answered all parts of the question precisely Use of module material Demonstrate you have read, understood and can apply course concepts Use diagrams (if appropriate) A picture really is worth many words when you are writing an assignment Referencing When you use a module concept reference it in the text Word count Take care not to exceed the word limit (up to +10% is accepted) Allocating time / words Look at the weighting of the marks and what you are asked to do Referencing instructions can be found in the Assignment Booklet. Please remember that most of your references will be to the Course Materials because they are your sources. Only reference the underlying study if you have actually accessed it yourself (you might want to make a special note to tell me that you have done so – I may assume that you haven’t!) If your wordcount goes more than 10% over the stated limited, you will lose marks – up to 10%. If you try and “hide” lots of expressive text in tables and/or footnotes, I will count that towards the wordcount limit. Tables and footnotes are for table data (columns and rows, very few words and numbers) and references. Diagrams are allowed in business studies – they need to be relevant and you need to explain them in your text by using them to support your argument. So use them wisely and sparingly.

Planning for success

Make a plan for tackling TMA02 … and then follow it!

Assessment: TMA02 This TMA requires you to search for a job advert either online or through a different medium (newspapers, job centre, etc.) and then to discuss ideas from Block 2 in relation to this job advert. Before writing your TMA, - find a job advertisement that interests you – start now! - find one with enough detail to allow you to write about it . - investigate the job offered – look at the website, job description etc. - keep a copy of it, you will need to attach it to your assessment as an appendices. Remember: Based on Block 2 Readings Present different perspectives i.e. from the point of view of the recruiter and from the point of view of the job applicant

Assessment : TMA 02 Question1: Briefly describe the job in the advertisement that you have found and explain where you have found it and why (the job) interests you. (20 marks)   This is fairly straight forward; explain where you found the advert, and why you selected this advert.  What attracted you to job. Write approximately 200 to 250 words on this question This is written from your viewpoint as a potential applicant for this job.

Assessment : TMA 02 Question 2: Imagine you are the HR manager for the company that placed this job advert. Explain what selection methods are available to you and which one(s) you would choose for selecting a candidate for this particular job. Give reasons for your answer. (40 marks) There are 2 parts here: 1. What are the selection methods available? - Reading 13 will be useful here.  Look at the strengths and weaknesses of the full range of methods – a table might be a useful way to present this.  This should help you identify if or how each selection method could be applied to the job in the advert you’ve chosen. 2. Which selection methods are most relevant for the vacancy that you have chosen? Why? Based on the strengths and weaknesses that you have identified, which methods will help to choose the best person for your vacancy? Why? Why are the other selection methods not the best choice? Write approximately 400 to 450 words on this whole question. Written from the viewpoint of the HR Manager.

Use of tables Question 2 Part 1: Selection Method (& brief description) Strengths Weaknesses Question 2 Part 2: I would choose the following Selection Methods: Interview because . . . . 2. etc.

Assessment : TMA 02 Question 3: Imagine you are the candidate selected for the job. How do you think this job could be designed to give you high job satisfaction? Give reasons for your answer. (30 marks) You have been successful and have got the job! This could be tackled in 3 parts 1. Start by explaining some of the principles of job design and how they can help with job satisfaction. Concepts from Reading 14 will help you with this answer. You may find it useful to include a snapshot of the JCM model from page 34, but you must also use words/prose to explain the model. 2. Then consider what you would find satisfying in a job (any job) 3. Finally, outline how you think the job in the advert could best be designed so that you would find it satisfying. Give reasons for your answer. Write approximately 350 to 400 words on this whole question. Written from your own viewpoint as the successful candidate. A useful time to explain how diagrams can be applied to the context the student is discussing, to add value, and therefore demonstrate understanding of the concept and earn marks (for little word count) This skill will be invaluable as they progress through B100 onto level 2 and level 3

Assessment : TMA 02 Part 2 – 10 marks An easy 10 marks for your participation in the TGF activities – don’t throw these marks away! Have you already contributed to the discussions?

Checklist questions for TMA02 Where will you find the job advert? What makes a good advert to select for this task? Have you read up about and understood selection methods? Have you worked out the pros and cons for each selection methods in relating to your job advert? Have you made a decision about which methods are best and why? Have you read up on and understood the approaches to job design? Which approach would be best for you to do this job? Have you written an outline for your assignment, with indicative number of words for each section? Have you included and checked references to module materials and other sources?

Failure to reference sources upon which you Referencing Failure to reference sources upon which you draw is: PLAGIARISM Referencing resource: http://learn1.open.ac.uk/mod/oucontent/view.php?id=2620 PLAGIARISM is defined as taking, using and passing off as your own, ideas or words of another It is a serious academic offence and can result in work being failed Remember to reference your sources in your work Further links can be provided in the TGF-OU Library Harvard Reference link if necessary. Requirements of TMA02 Due to be submitted by 12 noon on 23 March Worth 20% of continuous assessment mark; marked out of 100. Q1 is marked out of 90 and Q2 (TGF activities) are marked out of 10 = 100 total mark. Word limit: 1000 words Use an ‘informal report’ style – This is the same as the structure for TMA 01 so see the feedback from TMA 01 for help with this.
