Current Services Drop-In Consultations On-Going Support Students seeking help with any writing assignment or project can “drop-in” to the Write Place during regular business hours, no appointment necessary. On-Going Support Students seeking to address deficiencies in writing can work regularly with a consultant at a predetermined time. Appointments are scheduled via the Write Place Coordinator. Online Consultations Students can submit written work, up to 5 pages, for feedback to the Write Place via the Digital Drop-Off solution. Go to: http://learningservices.udayton.edu/writeplace/

Process Student-client completes “student” portion of consultation report, identifying expectations for the session and providing demographic information. If student-client signs report, document sent to instructor. Consultation session occurs; typical session lasts 30-50 minutes. Consultant completes “consultant” portion of consultation report, identifying what was discussed during the session. Head consultant summarizes report in WP data base and sends report to instructor.

Traffic: Who Visits the Write Place Fall 2009 779 Freshman 125 Sophomores 79 Juniors 59 Seniors 95 Graduate students 69 unidentified Total = 1195 Spring 2010 299 Freshman 92 Sophomores 87Juniors 45Seniors 55 Graduate students Total = 647 Busiest year ever! Over 1,800 consultation sessions!

Student Expectations of a Write Place Visit To find helpful consultants. Student peer leaders who are passionate about writing. Consultants, not “tutors.” Consultants do not give “right” and “wrong” answers as the idea of a “tutor” may convey. Rather, consultants give expert advice and exchange ideas with the client. To receive assistance at ALL stages of the writing process. Prewriting, writing and rewriting. To improve as a writer. Consultants address both strengths and weaknesses. To exchange ideas with the consultants. Write place sessions are conversations.

What NOT to Expect From a Visit To find a proofreading service. Consultants will help with mechanics but will not simply correct a paper. To receive adequate last minute help. To have consultants predict a grade. To have consultants write the paper.

Key Points to Share with Students Don’t be afraid! Student writers will be working with competent peer consultants. It’s FREE! There is no fee to use this service. Not just for English class! Write Place is open to help students in all subject areas and on any writing assignment. Come as often as you like! There is no limit to how often a student can leverage the service. Bring to the session a copy of the professor’s assignment sheet; it promotes a more effective consultation experience. Bring to the session a hard copy of the draft; this enables the student to take notes during the session.

Key Points For Faculty Consultations are most effective when students are there willingly; please do not require students to visit the Write Place. We are happy to accommodate your course if you decide to “strongly encourage” your class to visit or offer extra credit. Please contact the Write Place Coordinator. Write Place is a supplemental resource to your course instruction. Feel free to encourage your students to visit frequently. Write Place can facilitate workshops on targeted areas of writing. Suggestions are welcomed.
