Goals for Inquiry Strand Understand Science as Inquiry as described in the National Science Education Standards State goals for the Inquiry Strand MPS High School Science Academy, Year 1, 2006-2007

Inquiry Card Sort Sort cards into two piles: “What is inquiry?” and “What is not inquiry?” Discuss at your table which cards were hard to classify, and any conditions that you would apply in classifying the cards. Preserve your piles with paper clips. State Task Distribute cards. ACTIVITY PHASE (~10-15 min) DISCUSSION PHASE Facilitate reporting out (group by group) Focus on those cards that were difficult to classify. Have participants share their thinking. What would you need to see to move a card to the Inquiry pile? FOLLOW UP Have participants put paperclips on their piles and save until re-visit at end of inquiry strand.
