Denotation & Connotation Denotation is the dictionary definition of a word. For instance, the word “snake” denotes a scaly reptile. Connotation is the emotional ideas surrounding a word. For instance, the word “snake” connotes evil and danger. Everyone reacts emotionally to words, so writers should carefully choose words that will cause desired emotions in their readers.

Connotation Rate the following groups of words from negative to positive in terms of their connotation: Thin, slim, skinny, slender, bony, anorexic Shrewd, egghead, bright, clever, brilliant, cunning, smart, intelligent, brainy Plain, dull, ugly, unattractive House, home, abode, domicile, residence
