Literary Term: Connotation Origin: Medieval Latin (NOUN) Word: connotare  "signify in addition to the main meaning Dictionary Definition: the associated or secondary meaning of a word or expression in addition to its explicit or primary meaning. In other words… what you must know in order to determine the reference of an expression. Antonym: DENOTATION- literal meaning of a word. Connotation refers to the suggested or implied meaning or emotion associated with a word. In contrast, denotation refers to the literal meaning of a word.
