Deciduous Forest

Brown Bear Brown bears have an absolutely incredible sense of smell and under certain conditions can detect odors well over a mile away.

white-tailed deer The white-tailed deer has protective coloring, or camouflage, that allows it to hide in the undergrowth.

red-tailed hawk Red-tailed hawks have certain oils in their eyes that make prey stand out in the tall grasses. This is helpful because red-tailed hawks are carnivores, so they eat small, scurrying animals.

opossum When threatened, it will exhibit behaviors like running, growling, belching, urinating and even defecating. Sometimes it will "play 'possum." and roll over, become stiff, drool, and its breathing will become slow and shallow. This coma-like state can last up to four hours Some predators will think the opossum is dead and go away!

turkey Their bills are suitable for picking up seeds and insects from leaf litter off the ground.

porcupine A porcupine’s quills can stick into the attacker's flesh. The quills of the porcupine could kill the attacker by the germs injected with the quills or by damage to vital organs.

white oak tree When the white oak is only a seedling it produces a taproot. The taproot plunges into the ground during a drought to bring the tree water.

pecan tree Pecan trees commonly grow on rich, moist, well-drained soils that are not subject to prolonged flooding.

carpet moss Mosses are simple, rootless evergreen plants. They can live in a wide variety of habitats, but are most often found covering the ground, growing on stream beds, and on the base of trees in deciduous woodlands.

Guelder rose The berries are bright red and attract birds that spread the seeds. The very large white outer layer of flowers also attracts pollinating insects to the inner part of the flower.
