PLAN FOR THE FUTURE Senior Presentation Class of 2018

June 9, 2018

Proper Planning = Success Life After KWHS? Work Military (ex. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard) Technical Schools (ex. ECPI, Bryant and Stratton …) Apprenticeship Programs (ex. Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding) Two-Year Community or Junior College (ex. RCC, John Tyler, Reynolds, Richard Bland College) Four-Year College/Universities (ex. VT, JMU, Ferrum, ODU, Hampton) Proper Planning = Success

I don’t know where to start. ♥ Your counselor has worked hard to gather information for you. Go to the KWHS webpage and click on the guidance link: http://www.kwcps.k12.va.us/1/Content2/20218 ♥ There is information on ALL options after high school. LOTS OF INFORMATION  ♥ Meet with your counselor (or email with any questions).

College “to do” list * Do applications online * College Rep Days at KWHS- sign up in counseling office * Do applications online * READ directions & KNOW deadlines * Request transcript – from Parchment.com * Request letters of recommendation if needed * Sign up for SAT/ACT online, if needed * Proof your application before your submit it

Transcripts Go to www.parchment.com to request your KWHS transcript to be mailed to colleges, scholarships, employers etc. If you are taking DE classes, you will need to request your RCC transcript at the end of the year (June 2018). Go to your myRCC account, or pick up a paper form in the KWHS counseling office. If you are planning to play sports in college, you need to send transcripts from ALL high schools you have attended.

Recommendations Not all colleges require a recommendation letter. Employers usually request recommendation letters, or at least references. Who knows you best? Teacher? Boss? Coach? Family Friend? Minister? Youth Group Leader? Girl/Boy Scout Leader? (cannot use a relative) Counselor Rec - use info from Junior Packets & will only do a letter if junior packet is submitted. Packet can be found on school website or in counseling office. Be sure to give at least two weeks advance notice prior to your deadline for anyone writing a recommendation letter for you.

NCAA Eligibility Division I and II Sports If you intend to play DI or DII sports, you need to register with the NCAA. After registering, stop by the counseling office in order to request an official transcript be sent to the NCAA. You must send transcripts from ALL high schools you have attended. Send ACT/SAT scores directly from testing agency. Note: Your end of year transcript will be sent automatically. www.eligibilitycenter.org

Scholarships How do I find scholarships? Where can I find them? $ Do your research. You have to find them and apply for them. There are thousands of scholarships out there. Where can I find them? $ Start with the KWHS Pot o Gold scholarship database– on the guidance page of the KWHS website http://www.kwcps.k12.va.us/1/Content2/20218 $ Internet (fastweb.com, petersons.com) $ Ask family members and friends. Many employers, churches, and community groups offer scholarships. $ Look at the college’s financial aid website page. $ Sign up in counseling office to meet with GRASP Advisor.

Are You Interested in Joining the Military? ~ Speak to a recruiter during lunch visits ~ Consider taking the ASVAB Test on November 14. Sign up in the counseling office.

Community Colleges If you have, or are taking a DE class = college student already. Your college GPA starts with the completion of the first semester of a DE course. You will still apply to college as a freshman (even if you earn your Associate’s Degree while in high school). Guaranteed Admission programs to four-year colleges in Virginia (based on GPA and class selections at community college level) Apply by December- earlier for scholarships.

Trade/Technical Schools What types of career training is available? How do I apply? Where are they located? All of these questions and more can be answered with the information in the senior booklet: http://www.kwcps.k12.va.us/1/Content2/20218

So, what else is in the senior booklet? Along with Military, Trade/Technical School, 4 and 2 year college information, there is also LOTS of information on Careers (what are the trends/hot jobs/ most in need of employees, interview tips, statistics for VA), Apprenticeships, Financial Aid, Information for Athletes and more!

Transition Tips- how to succeed at life after high school Learn how to do your own laundry. Wake yourself up in the morning, don’t depend on your parents or siblings. Get in the kitchen and learn how to cook. If 18 yrs old, make your own Doctor’s appt. etc. Be your own advocate. Create your own bank accounts & discuss credit cards with your parents DO YOUR OWN college, employment, military, and scholarship applications!

Have a great senior year! We are here to help but remember … it is your responsibility to know what is needed for each application you submit as well as your deadlines. Class of 2018!
