Backward Trajectory Modeling & GIS Demo James Payne Environmental Protection Department Morongo Band of Mission Indians

What it can show Shows where a “parcel” of air has been and the route it traveled. Will show areas where it speeds up/slows down. Can show large scale wind patterns Can be combined with other air quality data to give a more robust view of information Emission sources Pollutant amounts Monitors and monitor data Meteorological data

Why it’s helpful Shows what areas and what elevation the air traveled over, Potentially identify where pollutants started being transported Can help explain monitor levels and/or spikes in data Can help justify notification requirements Identify trends that happen as a result of seasonal, daily, or other timely shifts It’s data analysis!

Integration into GIS Provides shapefile Can edit to create line Hourly plots only Can edit to create line Can associate the data to display hourly, daily movement and/or elevation points, and some meteorological data too. More information the better, add in data from NEI, State & local air organizations. Monitors, emission sites, types & amounts of pollutants

Benefits and Restrictions Understanding data Potentially understanding where pollutants are coming from What pollutants might be a concern Identify predominant air streams Potential threats can be mitigated Doesn’t take into account local conditions or topography
