Western Lake Superior Region The WLSR is united by a similar climate and small farm agricultural history. With harsh winters and extensive hydrography through much of this region, this is unique and often challenging area to farm. The largest and only real urban center is the Duluth, MN –Superior, WI area – right in the crux of the arm of Lake Superior. Part of our research included exploring to what degree farmers identify with this region – or what they would consider their “agricultural region”. What is the capacity of this region to produce food and to meet consumers’ needs? This basic information is vital to integrate local food systems into the long term sustainability of the region. Western Lake Superior Region Canada WE ARE 479,856 people on 18 million acres and we spend $1.2 billion a year on food WE HAVE 1,620,000 million acres to farm WE NEED 500,000 acres to feed our population 10 Minnesota, USA Wisconsin, USA
