Welcome to Second Grade Open House

Meet Mrs. Ghrist Earned Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education(K-6) with a concentration in Natural Sciences in 2004 Earned Master of Education in Literacy in 2006 Earned K-12 Principal Certification in 2011 Taught 2nd grade at Westmont Elementary in Johnstown, Pa from 2005-2008

Expectations *No one talks, while another is talking. CLASSROOM RULES *Respect each other. *No one talks, while another is talking. *Raise hand to be recognized. *Quiet in the hallway and bathrooms. REWARDS *Positive notes home *Certificates of achievement *Stickers *Fun items to keep *Whole class marble treats CONSEQUENCES Yellow card—warning Blue card—lose 5 minutes of recess Orange card—lose 10 minutes of recess and write note home

Homework Binder On the first day of school, second graders are to bring a 1-inch 3-ring binder with pockets on the inside front and back covers. Please check your child’s homework binder nightly! Current spelling words are kept in the blue sleeve. Words are tested on Fridays. Current math fact lists are kept in the yellow sleeve. Timed tests are given on Wednesdays.

Storytown Students should read for at least 10 minutes nightly! READING *robust vocabulary discussed orally in class *weekly story should be read at home once it has been shared in class *comprehension tests are given on Fridays—students read the tests independently Students should read for at least 10 minutes nightly! SPELLING *new lists given on Mondays *tests given on Fridays *challenge words are graded WRITING/GRAMMAR *weekly writing and grammar activities correspond with what is being studied in Storytown *students also take some assignments through the writing process

Go Math! STUDENTS WILL STUDY: *number concepts *numbers to 1,000 *basic facts & relationships *2-digit addition & subtraction *3-digit addition & subtraction *money and time *length in customary & metric units *data & graphing *geometry BASIC FACTS— Practice, practice, practice! (Weekly timed tests will be given. Yellow study pages will come home for practice).

Health Emotional and Intellectual Health Growth and Development Nutrition Disease Prevention and Control Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drugs (Saint Vincent College Prevention Projects)

Technology Update Back to School Forms SchoolMint - Parents/Guardians will be receiving information and instructions on the first day of school along with an access code. (paper form)   Email registered with GLSD, parent will receive this information through an email.   If a parent does not wish to complete the information online, we will provide them the opportunity to request printed forms. District Mobile App / District Website Makeover (appearance and function) FCC Ruling - will not longer permitted to send broadcast e-Alerts Anticipated within the next month

Snacks We are a PEANUT and TREE NUT FREE CLASSROOM. Birthday Treats  Are always welcomed! Please send in when works best for you. No prior notification needed. When sending in cookie cake, please cut into pieces before sending in. Thank you! No daily snacks needed in second grade.

Reminders Morning tutoring—by invitation on Tuesdays and Thursdays Remember to check the homework binder each evening Conferences—will take place in November—sign-up tonight!  Take a post-it to remember the time you selected.
