Math 6ES Cindy Callard Team 6-2 Curriculum Night October 5, 2017

A little bit about me… This is my 29th year at TCMS. I have taught 6th, 7th and 8th grade both regular and accelerated classes; Am currently at TCMS on “odd days” only and this is my only class; Remainder of my time is at the U of R in the Warner Graduate School of Education working with masters and doctoral students, as well as in-service math teachers across the region providing professional development.

Andrew is a freshman at UB, and Jack just started his senior year. Three children –Bridget is a junior at NC State in Raleigh. Andrew is a freshman at UB, and Jack just started his senior year. My husband is a high school counselor in Webster.

Brighton Middle School Mathematics Program Research-based Problem centered Provides skills practice Designed to teach for understanding Emphasizes connections within mathematics and other disciplines Provides opportunities for students to explain their thinking/strategies in a variety of ways Completely aligned with the CCSSM

What will students be doing in math class? Working on complex problems that won’t always be solved in one class lesson. Explaining their strategies verbally and in writing. Making sense of other’s strategies. Working in groups and on their own.

Jo Boaler, Professor of Mathematics from Stanford https://www.youcubed.org/four-boosting-math-messages-from-jo-and-her-students/Student on-line course! 6:05 – 8:15

Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Model with mathematics. Use appropriate tools strategically. Attend to precision. Look for and make use of structure. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Accelerated Math Program at TCMS 6th grade – Math 6ES (primarily 7th grade content; take 6th grade CC test) 7th grade – Math 7ES (primarily 8th grade content; take 7th grade CC test) 8th grade – Algebra 1ES offered here at the middle school (take Algebra CC test for a HS grade and credit)

Math 6ES Curriculum In our work together this year we will be: Building “algebraic thinking” by working with tables, graphs & equations; Exploring statistical ideas and concepts; Developing a deeper understanding of integers and their operations; Focusing on developing “proportional reasoning” and building a foundation for exploring linear relationships.

Homework policy…  If students miss class (music lesson, field trip, dentist appointment) they are responsible for work done in class and assignments for that day. They should show me any assignments that had been due, and pick up any work missed.

https://www.bcsd.org/Domain/373 (TCMS Teacher Pages)

District Requirements for ES Math Test/Quiz Average of 85% or above each quarter; Classroom performance that supports inclusion in the program (this includes HW completion)

Extra Help I am available most “Odd days” for extra help, additional practice, questions, etc.; Am happy to make arrangements to work with students during a study hall or lunch period; All Math 6ES classes are on the same schedule so Mrs. Liebenow (room 322), Mr. Lian (room 429) and Mr. Nells (room 331) can help as well!

How to Contact Me The best way to get in touch with me is e-mail: Cynthia_callard@bcsd.org OR ccallard@warner.rochester.edu
