Naming Acids and Bases Chapter 9
Acids… Contain one or more H+ when dissolved in water Anion combined with as many H+ as needed to make the molecule neutral Two types of acids 1. Binary: H + non-metal (HCl) 2. Oxyacid: H + polyatomic ion (H2SO4)
Binary Acids Form when certain gaseous compounds dissolve in water Naming depends on state of acid HCl(g) hydrogen chloride If it is dissolved in water (aq) hydro- (nonmetal root) -ic acid HI(aq) HCl(aq) H2Se(aq)
Oxyacids Naming does NOT depend on the state Name the polyatomic ion Replace –ate with –ic or… Replace –ite with -ous Change non-metal root for pronunciation Add “acid” HBrO4 HIO2 (perbromate) (iodite)
Bases Ionic compounds that produce OH- when dissolved in water Follow same rules for naming ionic compounds NaOH Ca(OH)2 Fe(OH)3
