Haines School Expectation Night August 30, 2016

Student Expectations Respect others and their property.   Respect others and their property. Take responsibility for your actions. Come prepared to class – do your homework! Listen to directions. Follow them the first time they are given.

Discipline System Blue Card: Child starts on blue card for day and stays on blue even after one verbal warning. Green Card: After a second verbal warning, the child is asked to turn the card to green. The child maybe removed from group/activity and asked to work independently.

Discipline System Yellow Card: Child is asked to switch card to yellow after another warning. A note will be sent home explaining his/her actions. It will be signed by both student and teacher. Parents will also need to sign note to be returned the next day

Discipline System Red Card: Child is asked to switch card to red after this warning. Parents will receive a note or phone call home that day. Child may discuss his/her choices with Dr. Hall. The child may be asked to write an apology note depending on the circumstance.

Third Grade Curriculum LANGUAGE ARTS Storytown series Includes phonics and grammar We will also cover different kind of writing throughout the year, including narratives, extended responses, and expository essays

Third Grade Curriculum SPELLING Storytown series 15-20 new Priority Spelling words each week Students may ”test out” of the priority words if he/she receives a 100% on the Monday pretest. These students will be given another set of Challenge Words to be studied for the week and they will be responsible for knowing them on Friday’s Test. Students work on spelling and phonics activities throughout the week Weekly spelling test on Friday of Priority and Challenge Words

Third Grade Curriculum MATH Everyday Math series Emphasizes problem-solving strategies and using math in everyday life We will also cover multiplication and division sometime after Winter Break I recommend all students to have a set addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division flashcards at home to study at least 5 min. a night.

Third Grade Curriculum SCIENCE Scott Foresman Illinois series Two major themes: Earth Science and Space & Technology Topics include: water, weather, natural resources, the solar system, constellations, and more!

Third Grade Curriculum SOCIAL STUDIES Pearson My World series Focuses on World Geography, U.S. History, map reading, and famous historical figures.

Homework Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday. There is no homework on Fridays! Homework should take no more than thirty minutes each evening, with ten to fifteen of those minutes used for reading. If an assignment is late, a reminder note will be sent home (usually in the Assignment Notebook) Two missed assignments will be allowed per month. If more then two are missed, a student will make up the missed assignments during an end of month study hall. Students who have only missed one or less assignments may receive an extra end of month recess.

Homework Your child will write down assignments in his/her assignment notebook. For the start of the year please sign your child’s assignment note book to help your child grow in his/her personal responsibilities as a third grader. On Fridays, general notes and most graded papers will come home in the Take Home Folder.

Snack Your child will eat snack in the afternoon. Healthy foods are encouraged! No peanut butter, please! Your child also will be allowed to keep a water bottle on his/her desk.

Weekly Newsletter Our class newsletter will contain the goals and lessons to be covered in the next week of school It will also have any important dates and changes with a quick ”note” to parents. I will be sending out the Newsletter via email every Friday. If you ever do not receive one please let me know. If you prefer a paper copy of the newsletter also please let me know.

Odds and Ends Students cannot wear flip-flops on the mulch at recess. Please make sure to follow the Haines dress code! Please remember the District policies on holiday parties. Please send a note with your child if you will be picking him/her up early that day. This power point will be posted on my Haines School Webpage.
