I Want to Get Payed, Not Played ! Kyon Clark Professor Ramos English 1A
College sports are becoming incredibly profitable, but the athletes who perform the touchdowns, slam-dunks and deep threes leave us confused on why they see none of that money. NCAA takes in almost $11 billion in revenue annually across college sports. The biggest earners are football, basketball and baseball, and no player receives a dime from there respected sport! Numbers by the Year
More Statistics If the average NCAA college football player in Division One spends over 40 hours a week on their game, then they are working the same amount as those in full-time employment do. So it is basically having a job but not getting paid. These hours are distributed over training sessions, games, travel and other required sessions that student athletes must attend in order to remain on the team and keep their full scholarship.
Reasoning One of the biggest reasons that the NCAA has defended its policies on paying college athletes is because these athletes are often on full scholarships that cover tuition, accommodation, fees and meal plans at the university they attend. There are crucial expenses that are not covered by scholarships. For example, athletes who spend 90 hours a week training and studying will often find themselves starving well after the university’s dining facilities have closed.
More Reasons… NCAA coaches can often earn an average of $100,000 per year. There is no reason why the coach of the team should be making all that money, yet the players do not receive anything. A $100,000 salary is fair for professionals who draw so much money into the school through the leadership of their sports teams.
Cons Some people might argue about the recent scandals in the past few years that paying student athletes might be a bad idea. People argue that they will not earn there degrees, will not go to class and eventually drop out of school. How would we know if we do not give them a chance?
Final Reason A Salary Would Help Student Athletes Learn How to Manage Their Money Having money already during college will help you learn how to manage it so you do not blow it all in the pros. We see pros file bankrupt all the time, they have no experience, PAY THE COLLEGE ATHLETES!
Conclusion With all that being said I truly hope that some committee can come to the conclusion or at least an idea that student athletes should be paid. I am not saying pay the athletes as much as Kobe Bryant no not at all but something to be able to make sure we are not starving is the least they can do. I hope we can come to this decision in the future.
