Optoelectronics internal report, 17 August 2007 Optical Multi-Ribbon Cables Protection Part II Daniel Ricci (in collaboration with Karl Gill and Robert Grabit) Web page: http://indico.cern.ch/categoryDisplay.py?categId=482 Daniel Ricci Optoelectronics internal report – CERN, 17 August 2007

Protection job: objectives Uninstall all the cables at TIF (i.e. Tracker 25% test, Tracker sub-systems integration, Cosmic Rack); Recuperate all the cables around (i.e. Pisa, other institutes/people, various buildings, etc...); Protect/assign all cables for P5; Protect all spares and classify them in order of priority; Classify all broken ones and protect them on the good end; Store everything ready for P5. Daniel Ricci Optoelectronics internal report – CERN, 17 August 2007

Protection job: logistics Model replicated the previous one in Bld 216: Carry on operations in a flexible way according to people/spaces available; two benches for protection installed + one for cable inspection + OTDR station for dubious; Mohsin was the SW responsible and supervised the cables flow; Benjamin took in charge the box logistics (also for the future). Daniel Ricci Optoelectronics internal report – CERN, 17 August 2007

Protection job: final report Job in the TIF lasted 4 weeks. People involved in place were from 2 to 8 (depending on availability). Numbers below include the previous ones (see Part I) L [m] Protected 45 7 50 225 55 60 116 65 39 100 125 612 Total cables protected: 612 (564 assigned; 4 mechanical; 44 spares) 93% of the total Unavailable cables: 31 (not compliant, broken, etc...) 4.7% of the total   Unavailable 45 11 50 6 55 7 60 4 65 1 100 125 2 31 Unavailable includes: 4 in Bld. 904 4 in Bld. 186 7 in Bld.14 including 4 reference (working) cables reserved by Francois 3 still loaned (2 Pisa 1 TOB) Daniel Ricci Optoelectronics internal report – CERN, 17 August 2007

Protection report : used cables (global) Cables removed from TIF: 134   TEC cold room (TIF) TIF (25% + integration) Integration in Pisa (TIB) TEC petals integration (Bld.186) CRack Total Visual inspection 44 116 6 8 4 178 Light box MPO inspection 18 OTDR 1 3 22 Total failures 2 12 1 has one fiber broken @ 1m from MPO; 1 has MFS pins broken; 1 missed a QR on R8 (replaced); 1 has edge of one MFS broken. 1 with complete delamination on MFS. Repaired with kapton. 1 with MFS connector broken. 4 non compliant. 2 with missing pin on MFS. 2 with missing pin on MFS. 1 with 3 fibres broken MPO side. 3 delaminated, repaired with kapton and classified as spare. 1 with broken ribbon at 16.75m from MFS; 1 with broken fiber at about 50cm of MFS; 1 with broken fiber on MFS edge; 1 with scratched MPO and other problems. Frank at the visual inspection bench. Arrived from Pisa: good. Daniel Ricci Optoelectronics internal report – CERN, 17 August 2007

Protection report: boxes Used boxes: 204 (including CFF ones) Boxes repaired: 2 Empty available: 0 (10 big cartons for emergency) All the boxes were moved to Bld. 226 (also the 3 in Bld 904 and 2 in Bld. 14 will be moved). All CMS sectors Spares/broken Daniel Ricci Optoelectronics internal report – CERN, 17 August 2007

Protection report: Inventory Inventory has been regularly updated and re-baselined at the end; 13 errors were found in the Inventory (due to duplicated/inverted QR codes) and corrected by special entries; 280 INB labels (50% of the used ones) were found unreadable during operations and even after reprinting; A copy of the Inventory is in Dbcme and EDMS. PLUS Sector Cassette Slot INB number User code INB code Cable name Rack # Left side Crate: Middle Slot # Daniel Ricci Optoelectronics internal report – CERN, 17 August 2007

Protection report: plan for broken cables The compliant broken cables are in total: 15. No repair is foreseen for the non compliant ones (12). Details: Immediately repairable (splice) Non repairable To be better checked Will not be repaired because that length is not necessary (will be taken as source of connectors instead, in case of splice on installed cables) Daniel Ricci Optoelectronics internal report – CERN, 17 August 2007

Conclusions 612 (93%) cables have been protected. 564 stored in the final boxes; Spares and broken cables are classified, ordered and stored in separate boxes. All cables are in Bld. 226; people worked very well according to the logistics; The inspection on used cables revealed 12 failures (7% of the total used) bringing the total unavailable at 31 (4.7%); Broken cables will be repaired as next step; The Inventory was systematically updated with comments and error corrections; In the future: cables will be moved to P5 according to the plan for installation and space available (TBD).
