DIAL Update Doug Ilg Raytheon ITSS Doug.Ilg@gsfc.nasa.gov HDF-EOS Workshop III September 14, 1999

Background NRC report recommended broader distribution of EOSDIS functionality Small scale data producers wanted easy-to-use, yet powerful data distribution method Many data producers have very tiny budgets

Basic Design Goals A turn-key data distribution system that: Promotes EOSDIS standards Administrator Low (no) cost No licensing difficulties Easy maintenance User Easy to use Catalog search Dynamic browsing Easy data retrieval

Building Blocks Public domain, off-the-shelf (PDOTS) components Apache WWW server NCSA Scientific Data Browser Custom CGI Search engine with HTML and Java interfaces Basic visualization for browse purposes Home grown “database” JDBC interface Free Web browsers

“Classic” Features Inventory support Hybrid interface including HTML, Java, JavaScript Simple, configurable metadata search Spatial/temporal/other Basic visualization of HDF and HDF-EOS files HTML for structural information GIF for browse imagery Immediate data download HDF/ASCII/binary Inventory support Custom “flat file” JDBC

“New” Features Animation Coastline and political boundary overlays Color compositing for multi-band images Cross-granule subsetting and subsampling Support for Version 0 protocol

V0 Interoperability Results Very successful demonstration at GOIN99 Used as basis for ESIP Federation “cluster” Accepted as component of “System Wide Interface Layer” for Federation Remaining problems: V0 is only supported on Sun and SGI Seen as old technology CIP is still in flux
