AIM: What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic cellular respiration?

What is the equation for Cellular Respiration? C6H12O6 + O2 CO2 + H2O + ATP Releases CO2 by breaking down glucose molecules in the presence of O2 Energy in organic food molecules (glucose) is used to produce ATP= energy the body can use. It is an enzyme controlled reaction.

Where does cellular Respiration occur? MITOCHONDRIA

Two types of cellular respiration: Aerobic and Anaerobic Oxygen No oxygen

What is needed for _______ cell respiration? Aerobic Glucose Oxygen

Aerobic Respiration Uses O2 and glucose Raw materials= O2 and C6H12O6 End products= CO2, H2O and ATP

How do these material get into and out of our cells? * O2 (oxygen): * C6H12O6 (Glucose): -breathe in, diffuses into -food we consume, diffused blood and carried to cells into blood and carried to cells

Do plants carry out aerobic respiration? YES!

Why do ALL living things carry out cellular respiration? *To carry out life processes: Metabolism

Anaerobic Cellular Respiration Organisms make ATP (energy) WITHOUT oxygen There are two types of anaerobic respiration 1. Alcoholic Fermentation 2. Lactic Acid Fermentation

Alcoholic Fermentation = Glucose  2 CO2 + 2 Ethyl Alcohol The process that converts glucose into pyruvic acid? Glycolysis The net gain in ATP for this process? 2 ATP

Alcoholic Fermentation Yeast and bacteria cause fermentation Why does bread have so many holes? The gas released during fermentation creates bubbles and pockets that make bread rise.

Can we perform anaerobic cell respiration? Yes, when our muscles run out of oxygen they perform lactic acid fermentation

Lactic Acid Fermentation Glucose  2 Pyruvic Acid  2 Lactic Acid The process that converts glucose into pyruvic acid = Glycolysis The net gain in ATP for this process = 2 ATP

Lactic Acid Fermentation When bacteria and animal muscle cells run out of oxygen, they produce lactic acid.

Alcohol Fermentation vs. Lactic Acid Fermentation What is the organic compound used by both? Glucose What is their main product? 2 ATP How are they different? Alcohol fermentation produces alcohol and CO2 and lactic acid fermentation produces lactic acid What organisms utilize alcohol fermentation? Yeast and Bacteria What organisms utilize lactic acid fermentation? Bacteria, fungus, and muscle cells when they run out of oxygen
