Presentation transcript:

Forest Pest ID

Animal: Bark Beetle Larva

Fungal: Western Gall Rust—usually not lethal, but will stress the host. Pruning usually eliminates the pest.

Environmental: Sunscald

Parasitic Plant: Dwarf Mistletoe (note the “witches broom effect)

Fungal: canker

Animal: Bear damage

Animal: Spruce Budworm— defoliator

Environmental: lightning scar

Animal: Douglas-fir Tussock Moth--defoliator

Fungal: Brown Cubical Butt Rot

Beetle Lifecycle

Fungal: Western White Pine Blister Rust

Animal: Tent Caterpillar— defoliates broadleaf deciduous trees

Fungal: Pouch Fungus—does not kill a tree rather it decomposes trees that are already dead

Fungal: Swiss Needle Cast—usually not lethal but causes stress in younger conifers

Fungal: Western White Pine Blister Rust has an alternating host Ribes species (currants)

Environmental: Freeze Check (frost crack)

Animal: Emerald Ash Borer— host specific Ash only

Animal: Fir Engraver Beetle—adult female lays her eggs and the hatched larva eat the cambium (active growing region) of the host tree. The patterns created are referred to as “galleries.” Each species of bark beetles create their own unique galleries.

Parasitic Plant: Dwarf Mistle toe. Robs host tree of nutrients.
