Introduction to Cells

Cells are the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism

Cell wall The cell wall is the outermost border of the cell. It protects the cell and gives it shape.

Cell Membrane Cell Wall in animals Cell Membrane in Plants Cell Wall

Cytoplasm *the fluid substance inside the cell that fills the space between organelles and allows for transport of substances*

Organelles Ribosomes (make Proteins) Golgi Body (Packages Proteins) Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (assembles proteins) Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (makes hormones and lipids) Vacuoles (Store nutrients) Lysosomes (remove waste) Mitochondria (powerhouse of the cell) Centrosome (aides in cell division) Chloroplast (plants – produces chlorophyll for Photosynthesis)

Organelles

*surrounds the outer boundaries of the nucleus* Nuclear Envelope Nucleolus Nucleoplasm *the central, dense middle of the nucleus – contains the genetic material* *fluid that fills the space between the nuclear envelope and nucleolus* *surrounds the outer boundaries of the nucleus*

Review Cells are smallest structural and functional unit in organisms Made of cell wall/membrane, cytoplasm, organelles, and a nucleus Plants have cell walls and chloroplasts, while animal cells have a cell membrane
