The Grassland Biome By: Abby

Where can you find the Grassland Biome and How is it unique? The Grassland biome covers half of Africa and large areas of Australia . It can also be located in some parts of India. The Grassland biome is unique because it covers about one-fourth of the Earth’s land, It is found on every continent except for Antarctica , and it is very hot and dry.

Animals in the Grassland biome Some species of animal that live in the Grassland biome are: elephants, giraffes, rhinos, zebras, warthogs, hyenas, and lions. Normally, none of these animals are domesticated. Elephants, giraffes, rhinos, zebras , and warthogs are herbivores. Hyenas and lions are carnivores. Herbivore means ‘plant eater’. Carnivore means ‘meat eater’.

Why is the grassland biome important? The grassland biome is important for raising live stock. If we were to destroy the grassland biome, many animals would go extinct, animals that live there have adapted to fit the needs of their environment. If we destroy the grassland biome, about one quarter of the earth will be missing and also, the animals that have adapted to the grassland biome will have to move and give up their ways of life and adapt to a totally new environment. Animals could possibly be killed.

QUIZ! What are 3 animals that live in the grassland biome? Where can the grassland biome be located? What is 1 reason why it is important to protect the grassland biome? (Answers may vary)
