Presentation transcript:

Skills for reading and writing Phonemes are the sounds made by blending letters to correspond to the spoken word. Blending Sliding sounds together to read a word. Segmenting Breaking a word down into individual sounds .

Phonics First. Frequent, fast and fun! Phase two (19 letters) S, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, h, b, f, l. CVC words e.g. cat Phase three (graphemes) J, v, w, x, y, z, qu. Ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er. Words e.g. chip and farm.

At school Daily phonics sessions: Revisit, teach and apply. Robot talk and sound buttons. Say the word slowly then try to hear each sound. Count the number of sounds. What letters do we need to represent them? Weekly spellings five words a week to learn.

Online games https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/ http://more2.starfall.com/n/make-a-word/en/load.htm?f

How you can help at home. Help the children practise reading and writing the letter sounds. Play games such as I spy so the children are able to hear the initial sounds. Play games modelling segmenting e.g. can you s-i-t? Can you r-u-n? Play word building games with the letters they have learned and encourage children to blend sounds to read words. Play word snap or have one or two words on the wall at home and get them to say them as they go past.

Please remember To enjoy reading and writing with your children. Some children will take longer than others to learn their sounds and start to read and write. Please don’t get anxious, they will get there when they are ready. If you have concerns or questions we are always here to help. Please come and see us.
