Topic II: Linear Equations in One Variable

Linear Equations on One Variable Multi-Step Equations No Solutions and Identities Objective: Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters. Essential Question: When solving a multi-step equation, which properties of real numbers can be used?

Linear Equations on One Variable Multi-Step Equations No Solutions and Identities Vocabulary Equivalent Equations: Are equations that have the same solution. They appear in each step along the process of solving an equation. Addition Property of Equality: Adding the same number to each side of an equation to produce an equivalent equation. Subtraction Property of Equality: Subtracting the same number to each side of an equation to produce an equivalent equation.

Linear Equations on One Variable Multi-Step Equations No Solutions and Identities Vocabulary Isolate: Getting the variable alone on one side of the equation. Inverse operation: Undoes another operation. For example, subtraction is the inverse of addition. Multiplication Property of Equality: Multiplying each side of an equation by the same nonzero number to produce an equivalent equation. Division Property of Equality: Dividing each side of an equation by the same nonzero number to produce an equivalent equation.
