The Maxi In And Out Of Fashion

Women’s fashions come and go in a cyclical manor and the maxi dress that first appeared in the nineteen sixties is back here again. It’s always reckoned that the mid-sixties blockbuster film Dr Zhivago was responsible for the arrival of the maxi as a fashion alternative to the mini skirt that younger women wore at the time. But a similar dress was around at the beginning of the twentieth century at the time of Queen Victoria’s death. Until that point women still mostly wore stays that held a dress away from the body.

In its sixties heyday the maxi was popular with the hippie type of girl usually with long hair and an interest in the pop culture of that time. The hippie look meant these dresses were often highly colourful loose garments floating to the ground. Perhaps more than other times in the past we have reached a point where people can dress pretty much as they wish. Walk down any street and you’ll see women in shorts, slacks, minis and maxis. There is not a uniform look that existed in many previous generations and this greater freedom of choice should be cherished. After all, just take a look at any photos of North Korean women to remind yourself how much more we enjoy choice.

Maxi dresses often make an appearance on the red carpet at grand parties or film premiers. They make many women appear slim and stunning even if they’re hiding less than perfectly shaped legs. Low cut at the back and front or with a side cut the length of the leg can make this a very sexy item of clothing. And with simple classic lines it’s a favourite of many a celebrity. Simple plain colours are best and white, red and black are all popular choices. To accentuate the height they should also be worn with high heels. But having said that, in the recent past one or two leading actresses wearing exactly this have come a cropper. A combination of a full length flowing dress and high heels whilst walking up carpeted steps requires some extra care.

Much has been said in the press recently about women’s work clothing Much has been said in the press recently about women’s work clothing. It all began when a temp receptionist turned up for her first day at work at a large accountancy firm in the City of London. She was ordered to either go and buy high heels or return home and get them. This came from her new male boss and she quipped that maybe he ought to buy a pair as well. This woman got a lot of sympathy from male and females alike but surprisingly, the firm was within its rights to make the request. Most offices have a dress code for their employees and whilst the maxi dress can make a great piece of evening wear it probably isn’t practical in the office.
