Preparing for OB Clinicals: Infant Safety and Security

Protecting Our Newborns Staff in OB areas have special security badges Unit is “locked down.” No entrance without someone opening the door for you

ID Bands Immediately after birth, infants receive two ID bands. One on the wrist; one on the ankle These ID bands and numbers match the mother and father’s ID bands

Security Sensors Applied to one ankle Doors lock and alarm sounds if infant comes within 10 feet Alarm sounds if sensor is cut. Special device and code required to remove it

Question: The pediatrician asks you to go to the mother’s room and bring the baby to the nursery for examination. Can you do it? Answer: No! You must have a special high-security badge. New mothers have been instructed never to give their baby to anyone without one

Question: The nursery nurse asks you to take the infant back to the mother’s room after his circumcision. Can you do it? Answer: At Chandler Regional you may. However before you give the infant to the patient, check both the mother and infant’s ID bands to ensure they match. **Banner policy states that students cannot bring a baby back to the mother**
