First, using your 20 questions Highlight the three most interesting responses people gave you!

A process paper either tells the reader how to do something or describes how something is done. Another example . . . .

So, think about your topic . . . .

What process are you trying to explain? Why is it important? #1. What process are you trying to explain? Why is it important?

#2 Who or what does the process affect?

#3 Are there different ways of doing the process? If so, what are they?

#4 Who are the readers? What knowledge do they need to understand this process?

What skills/equipment are needed for this? #5 What skills/equipment are needed for this?

#6 How long does this process take? Is the outcome always the same?

How many steps are there in the process? # 7 How many steps are there in the process? (your answer is three!)

#8 Why is each step important?

What difficulties are involved in each step? How can they be overcome? #9 What difficulties are involved in each step? How can they be overcome?

#10 Do any cautions need to be given?

#11 Does the process have definitions that need to be clarified?

#12 Are there other processes that are similar and could help illustrate the process that you are writing about?

Yes, for me you may use 2nd person! Process papers are often written in the second person (you), but some teachers prefer that you avoid this. Yes, for me you may use 2nd person!

Appropriate level of technicality Write for general readers unless you know readers have the relevant background and skills; do three things: 1. Give enough background so readers understand why they should follow your instructions. People who know why they are doing something usually do a better job than those who don't.

Appropriate level of technicality 2. Give appropriately detailed explanations so that reader can understand what the instructions say to do. 3. Give examples that will show readers how to follow the procedure correctly.

There are three levels of warnings in Process Essays when precaution is needed. When necessary, Precautions must be included before the step to which they apply. Warning! is used when there is immediate threat to life and/or limb if the step is mishandled. Caution! is used when there may be immediate threat of bodily harm if the step is mishandled. Attention! is used when there is an immediate likelihood of making a common error with the step.
