How to Calculate Speed and Acceleration

Speed Speed- the distance traveled divided by the time during which the motion occurred. Constant Speed- movement at a fixed distance per unit of time. The same amount of distance is covered by the object in the same amount of time at each measurement of that same interval. Instantaneous Speed-is the velocity of an object at a certain time. For example:- Suppose you are driving in a car with your father see the speedometer, its speed constantly varies, Because speedometer give speed at a particular moment of time.

Formulas How to calculate it Distance Time

Variables Expressed by Distance can be expressed in km (kilometers), mi (miles), m (meters), ft (feet). Time can be expressed in Hours, minutes, seconds, days. Speed can be expressed in m/s (meters per second), cm/s (centimeters per second), km/ hr (Kilometers per hour).

Determine which one is which A T S

Calculate it ____ ____ ____ ____ D D T S Given Work Answer D= 20 laps * .5 miles D= 10 miles D= 10 miles S = D/T T= 2 hours S= 10 miles / 2 Hours S= ? 5 MPH

Calculate it T D _____ __ __ __________ D T Given Work Answer S= 30 Meters/ 20 minutes D= ? S= 1.5 MPM D= S*T T= 60 minutes D= 1.5 MPM * 60 Minutes S= 1.5 MPM D= 90 meters

Calculate it _____ _____ _____ _____ T D T D Given Work Answer S= 3 Blocks/ 5 Minutes D= 15 Blocks T= ? S= .6 bpm S= .6 bpm T= D/S T= 15 Blocks/ .6 bpm 25 minutes

Acceleration Acceleration- the rate at which velocity changes over time. An object accelerates if it changes speed or direction.

Acceleration Formula Acceleration = Final speed- Starting speed Time it takes to change speed

Calculating Acceleration A roller coaster’s velocity is 20 m/s N at the top of a hill, then 4 seconds later, at the bottom of the hill, the velocity is 35 m/s S. What is the acceleration of the roller coaster? Time-4 seconds FS-35 m/s SS-20 m/s Acceleration= FS – SS = 35m/s-20 m/s = 15m/s Time 4 sec. 4s A= 3.75 m/s²
