Homeworking Katy, Katie and Hannah

What is it? A homeworker is anyone who works from home. Many homeworkers in the UK are employed in manufacturing, making a wide range of items from footwear to car components. It differs from a teleworker as the jobs are more manual, rather than the office-based tasks and electronic communication that they undertake

Evaluation: Advantages -          may be able to get more work done if employees are able to work from home rather than having to spend time commuting  to and from work -          improved retention of employees such as keeping parents who need more flexible working hours -          a wider pool of applicants from which to recruit such as people that want to work part time -          increased staff motivation with reduced stress and sickness levels (lower rate of absenteeism) -          savings on office space and other facilities -          possible location of sales staff near clients rather than being based in your premises

Evaluation: Disadvantages -          difficulty of managing home workers and monitoring performance -          possible deterioration in employees' skills and work quality -          difficulty of maintaining staff development and upgrading skills -          risk of information-security problems -          increased telecommunications costs -          risk of communication problems and a sense of isolation among home workers -          can be harder to maintain team spirit -          working from home is unsuitable for certain types of job -          can cause demotivation for other staff who have to attend work as they can feel that working at home isn’t productive -          distractions such as children may mean a loss of productivity -          specialist equipment for certain business such as a stockbroker may mean that there is a high cost in having to work from home communication may be reduced from working at home which may result in problems or mistakes occurring in the business
