Discuss Geoffrey & Intro to Anglo-Saxons
What made Arthur a legitimate king rather than a usurper? In what sense does the work resemble a tragedy? How do we give this book a sympathetic reading?
What’s sorts of symbols are important in Geoffrey’s work? What forms did Geoffrey use to portray supernatural influences? How does Geoffrey portray women?
What did you think of the reading by Gildas the wise? What topic(s) did he cover? How substantial was his influence on Geoffrey?
How does Geoffrey’s book end? With the death of Arthur With Saxon domination With the arrival of Christian missionaries With the reign of the antichrist in the guise of Mordred? Let me get back to you on that
Overall I would rate Geoffrey book A bust – don’t subject students to this rubbish It’s OK, but I would have preferred to read a book more like Campbell Nice. It was entertaining and I think I might have learned something Exquisite. I can’t get enough stuff about Arthur and Celts
The Anglo-Saxons What was the culture like? How did they differ from the Celts? How did they gain control of the island? How did they become Christian? How did they build a unified state? What sources can we use to understand them before they became Christian?
