Papyrus Industry Consortium - Notes Dec 2015 v2.1 Outline Papyrus IC Papyrus status Potential joint development opportunities Summary May 24, 2016 Papyrus Industry Consortium

Why Open Source Modeling? 2014-02-17 Why Open Source Modeling? Modeling has been used since mid 90’s Different aspects, including software design, system, network, information/data, business process Large user base Currently relying on commercial proprietary tools Modeling has demonstrated key benefits in many different contexts But, evolution and broader adoption has been limited by tools Tool usability Support for customization and Domain Specific Modeling Language (DSML) Missing capabilities regarding a number of different aspects More and better integrations … and by the proprietary nature of the existing tools License cost Restrictive EULA Very difficult (or impossible) to use in research contexts – main obstacle to tech transfer Cumbersome to use in multi-organization projects Proprietary nature of existing commercial tools is a main obstacle to evolution May 24, 2016 © Ericsson AB 2013

Open Source is the Only Solution! Papyrus Industry Consortium - Notes Dec 2015 v2.1 Open Source is the Only Solution! Everybody focused on a common objective Development of a complete MBE solution DSL … Gendoc The Papyrus Industry Consortium brings together all the players interested in developing a complete, open-source model-based engineering solution based on Eclipse Papyrus. To create a truly universal solution, members of the Papyrus IC should come from tool users and providers, and also from research and academia. Of course, Papyrus alone will not be enough, many other components and tools are needed to achieve the objective of providing a complete system development lifecycle, from team support through PLM, and all the disciplines in-between. So not only do we need (and have) members who are users, tool providers, researchers, and academics, we also need (and have) experts in many engineering domains. With such a focus and the dedication of the Papyrus- IC members, how could we fail? Collaborative Modeling Trace & Debug Validation Model Checking Code Gen Runtime Testing Simulation Deployment PLM May 24, 2016 Papyrus Industry Consortium

Papyrus IC – Mission/Vision Papyrus Industry Consortium - Notes Dec 2015 v2.1 Papyrus IC – Mission/Vision WHAT it does Develop a customizable and extensible industrial-grade open source MBE tool suite based on the Papyrus/Eclipse platform, other key open source technologies, and leading industry standards WHO it does it for  For companies developing software-based systems, from Enterprise Software  to Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) HOW it does what it does By fostering and leveraging collaborations between members of a vibrant community composed of end-users, suppliers, and research/academia This is a highlight of the mission of the Papyrus Industry Consortium. More details are available in the consortium charter at May 24, 2016 Papyrus Industry Consortium

Papyrus IC – Overall Goals Papyrus Industry Consortium - Notes Dec 2015 v2.1 Papyrus IC – Overall Goals Development and management of industrial-grade solution -- Governance Joint development financing Knowledge sharing Promotion of open source solution Development of the community Standardization Collaboration on research projects Contribution to MBE education and training May 24, 2016 Papyrus Industry Consortium

Papyrus Industry Consortium - Notes Dec 2015 v2.1 Papyrus Update Eclipse Papyrus 2.0 will be released as part of Eclipse Neon in June 2016 Eclipse Papyrus is a “Platform”, not a “Tool” Major improvements regarding both the technical and the project management aspects Support for UML 2.5 Best-in class customization and DSL support, RSA import Papyrus for Information Modeling Customized version of Papyrus for Information Modeling built on the Papyrus Platform Simplified installation and improved user experience (UX) To be released by Papyrus IC in June 2016 World-class development team CEA (project lead), Combitech, EclipseSource, Zeligsoft, and many other organizations Technology experts – includes Eclipse project leads/committers and world-renowned modeling experts University/research centers in North America and Europe Currently have technology experts involved in all main aspects May 24, 2016 Papyrus Industry Consortium

Benefits of Open Source in Standards Papyrus Industry Consortium - Notes Dec 2015 v2.1 Benefits of Open Source in Standards No more license cost and EULA issues All members can use the same tool No vendor lock-in Ability to independently develop the required capabilities – no IP/licensing constraints Possibility to leverage the developer community Freedom to use the same tool for internal development at no extra cost Enable establishment of a multi-SDO information model ecosystem Including common open source tool suite for many SDO’s, e.g. IoT, MEF Including common information model across different domains and verticals Leverage the investments made by Papyrus IC members in different MBE aspects E.g. Governance, best practices (from different domains) Foster collaborations with and leverage results from research/academia Be part of a vibrant community! May 24, 2016 Papyrus Industry Consortium

Joint Development Opportunities Papyrus Industry Consortium - Notes Dec 2015 v2.1 Joint Development Opportunities Joint financing is a main goal of the Papyrus IC Papyrus IC provides require mechanism to enable joint-financing Pool of Papyrus IC Supplier member organizations can provide the technical resources required to develop the different capabilities This mechanism can be used to establish collaborations with Papyrus IC members to develop new capabilities E.g. Different types of generations/model transformations and validations May 24, 2016 Papyrus Industry Consortium

Papyrus Industry Consortium - Notes Dec 2015 v2.1 Summary Papyrus is the leading open source modeling solution Papyrus IC ensures the development/evolution of an industrial-grade solution Papyrus is already used for information modeling in several different contexts Current plan is focused on development of a complete open source solution Join the community! Look forward for a fruitful collaboration! May 24, 2016 Papyrus Industry Consortium
