Culture and Intensive English Program Our Mission Statement “…to provide International Students with quality intensive academic English language instruction and a cultural orientation to the United States in preparation for study at the University of Northern Iowa or other institution of higher learning.”

Overview Background Our Procedure A Demonstration… Some Decisions We’ve Made

Background How we used to calculate passing rates… Pass/Fail Memo Report Percentage Rates by skill area Divide All passing grades = _____ = _____% All grades received in [skill] class Percentage Rages by level All grades received in [level] class

Background, cont. Programmatic Changes New leadership CEA Re-Accreditation, 2015

CEA Standards Curriculum Standard 1 Length and Structure of Program of Study Standard 2 The curriculum is consistent with the mission of the program or language institution, appropriate to achieve the organization’s goals and meet assessed student needs, and available in writing. The program or language institution’s curricular design clearly indicates the levels of instruction and specifies how students progress through a full program of study. (requires pass/fail data documentation)

CEA Standards, cont. Student Achievement Standard 2 Program Development, Planning, and Review Standard 2 The program or language institution documents in writing whether students are ready to progress to the next level or to exit the program of study, using instruments or procedures that appropriately assess the achievement of student learning outcomes for courses taken within the curriculum. The program or language institution regularly reviews and revises its program components and has plans, in writing, to guide the review of curricular elements, student assessment practices, and student services policies and activities. The plans are systematically implemented.

The New Procedure CIEP Pass/Fail Rates Procedure
