The Map of Somme

Leaders British: Douglas Haig (1861-1928) French: Ferdinand Foch (1851-1929) German: Rupprecht, (Prince of Bavaria)

Strategies of the British and French The Allies attempted to bombard the German trenches with 750,000 troops. Joffre presented The Plan of Action Proposed by France to the Coalition which stated that the Allies will launch large-scale attacks to wear down the German and Austria-Hungary. Tanks were used but were unsuccessful. Both sides suffered extreme casualties but Haig persisted to continue attacking. In theory, this would wear down the German forces.

Strategies of the Germans The Germans used machine guns to slow down the advancing British troops. Much of their fighting was done through trench warfare. Trenches were primarily used for defense. Barbed wire was used to protect the German troops.

Casualties Germany: 434,000–500,000 were killed Britain: 400,000 men were killed during the battle and more were injured France: 200,000

Who Won? The British won the battle, with the lead of Douglas Haig near the river of Somme. The reason for the victory was because Haig called his forces back which completed the objective of defending Verdun from the Germans The battle also resulted in making the German forces lose control over the Western Front and were kept off the territory Although the allies slightly won, there were so many casualties on each side, it ended in a draw

Impacts: Somme cemented the reputation of WWI as a war of terrible slaughter The British achieved in defending the French and helped them strike a heavy blow on the Germans. One of the bloodiest military battles in history. Allied nations ( France, Britain…) make gains after the war but no major breakthroughs were made Weapons continue to become more destructive. The French army progressed 6 miles and gained a large amount of land from the Germans (Flacourt Plateau).
