Learning intention: What do I need to demonstrate through the assessment task. What is an argumentative essay.

Your SAC: Task: “Giving media organisations total control over content would be detrimental to Australian audiences.” To what extent is this true? What must we know in order to achieve this?

What must we know in order to achieve this? What’s an argumentative essay?

Argumentative essay It’s persuasive…but it’s more comprehensive then a simple persuasive essay. An analogy would be to consider lawyers at a trial, they must consider both sides to a case. Lawyers present factual evidence for their position and refute the position of the opposition. KEY IDEAS You must take a position on an idea or concept You must consider both sides of the argument and counter the arguments of the opposition You must present factual information to support your position An argumentative essay is more authoritative than a persuasive essay, which at times can rely on emotions – you are not writing using an emotional tone – rather you need a distanced, factual tone that clearly states and rebuts your position in a formal manner.

Argumentative essay KEY IDEAS You must take a position on an idea or concept You must consider both sides of the argument and counter the arguments of the opposition You must present factual information to support your position An argumentative essay is more authoritative than a persuasive essay, which at times can rely on emotions – you are not writing using an emotional tone – rather you need a distanced, factual tone that clearly states and rebuts your position in a formal manner. Detail a strong contention as the back bone of your essay. In each body paragraph you must present an argument. Pair each argument with rebuttal that refutes the opposition to your contention. The work we’ve completed in class plus your own research will inform your arguments. No personal pronouns. Formal language. Technical vocabulary.
