Developing Effective Presentation skills Sarah Holt, the Ohio State University

Objectives By the end of this session, participants will: Recognize that anxiety is normal, be able to discuss how nervousness can affect behavior, and be able to use relaxation techniques to help manage their anxiety Be able to list features of effective presentations and explain why they are important Be able to explain how planning for presentations involves planning content, delivery, and ways to emotionally connect with audience Identify one specific presenting behavior related to their job duties that they want to focus on for the next year and establish a preliminary plan for developing or improving that behavior

Anxiety

Relaxation techniques

Identifying features of effective presentations As you watch, take notes on what’s working and what could be improved. Example 1 Example 2

Planning the Content Backwards design- working from your desired outcomes What do you want the audience to learn? What knowledge do they bring with them? What process do they need to move from where they are to where you want them to be? What visual aides do you need? What are the major points and how much time for each?

Planning Delivery Voice Cultivate a “presentation voice” Consider vocal tone, speed, modulation Practice out loud beforehand

Planning Delivery Use of Space Context specific Plan explicitly how you will move Build in places to check in with yourself

Connecting Emotionally Emotions are connected to our ability to learn Setting an emotional tone and building community can be part of your plan Short vs Long term connection building

Group brainstorm: What did you connect with so far?

Setting Personal Goals No one is a perfect presenter Greatness takes time Using the Presentations Skills Self Assessment What realistic goals will you set for this year?

Personal Goal Sharing Find the group that matches your most frequent or most challenging form of presentation Find a partner and share your personal improvement plan Share an example of a presentation you have coming up and how you specifically plan to implement what you’ve learned
