Improve YOUR results!!!

A Common Goal Lots of boys say things like: “I want to improve” “I want to get better results in Science” “I want to do something ‘hands on’ when I leave school” “I want to do well so I can do a VCE subject in Year 10” “I am aiming for an ATAR of 92”

The Pluses and Minuses of Goals It is great to have a goal If we don’t have a direction in life, we will get lost BUT….. Big, broad, vague goals that are a long way off are: REALLY HARD TO ATTAIN

What we Need is a Plan A plan is like a map which can help us reach our destination There are good plans and bad plans Good plans: Are easy to understand and implement Focus on actions Help to develop good habits

A Three Step Plan to Improve your Learning Step 1: Get organised Step 2: Review your work Step 3: Take great notes

Plans Within Plans… Ok, so How do I: Get organised? Review my work? Take great notes?

How do I get Organised?

Outlook Calendar Use Outlook to: Plan your day / week / month / year Map out your homework and review schedules Block out recurring commitments (sport, music lessons, work, church, tutoring etc) Remind you about tasks you need to complete

How do I Review my Work? Each weekday night spend 5 minutes per subject reviewing your work Use your school timetable for the day as your review timetable Do this before starting your homework Plug your review timetable into Outlook Highlight things you don’t understand Each Saturday / Sunday spend 10 minutes per subject reviewing the week’s work

The Benefits of Reviewing Work Most subjects ask students to recall information If you follow this system you will: Have done your work in class AND gone over it two more times in a week Reduce anxiety and gain confidence Have a structure to guide you Have developed a great life habit DO BETTER!!!!

How do I Take Great Notes? You need: a great system to take great notes to make note-taking a regular habit to avoid distractions in class

This System Works! Date Subject Topic

Notes in Class in Middle of Page Use dot points Use symbols/ arrows Use quotes

Review your Notes that Night Use left margin to catch key points No more than 3-4 points!!!

Review your Notes on Sunday Reduce page to one point Say it in a sentence!

You can do this in Word

You can do this in One Note

Outcomes Good things will happen if: You are organised

Outcomes Very good things will happen if: You are organised AND You regularly review your work

Outcomes Great things will happen if: You are organised AND You regularly review your work AND You take great notes

Just do it! If you do these things you will: Work smarter not harder Be doing something that every boy can do Be doing an ordinary things extraordinarily well

If you’re not going to do this… Do you have a better plan? What are you going to do?
