What is torture? Write the answer to this question on a post-it note and then stick it on the board.

Out of the 189 countries in the UN, in how many of them does torture occur? B) 50-100? C) More than 100? Between 1990 and 2000, acts of torture were recorded in over 130 countries- nearly 2/3 of all the countries in the world.

Key Words Torture: The deliberate inflicting of severe physical or mental pain or suffering by public officials to intimidate, punish or obtain a confession from a victim. Pressure Group: People who are trying to change public opinion or government policy. Amnesty International: A human rights pressure group who mainly campaigns against torture.
