Final project

Publication: Soldier Magazine I am going to use the November 2015 edition of this, as it allows for me to cover both the modern armed forces and remembrance day. This allows me cover both 2015 and 1915. The first picture is the front cover of the edition I will be using as a template. This publication is the British Army's magazine that is published for soldiers by soldiers. It covers everything from exercises, equipment, deployments, sport and many more things.

My ideas: The subject of my article will be on the massive differences between the British Army of 1915 to the British Army of 2015. I will compare weapons and tactics. I will use many terms from the armed forces as well as talk about many different things to do with the armed forces, specifically the Army. These will include talking about weapons and tactics.

Notes: 1915 Tactics: Creeping barrage was used. Tunnelling: Hill 60. Large artillery strikes followed by infantry charge. Large focus on the bayonet. The machine gun came into its own in this war, very good for defence. Gas attacks and flame throwers. Tanks first appeared ad infantry support vehicles. Planes came into the war industry becoming fighters and bombers. Cavalry was very ineffective after the beginning of the war. Artillery was used not only as a weapon to kill but to create psychological problems to the soldiers. In the form of long heavy barrages and constant artillery day and night.

Notes: 2015 Artillery is very accurate now so large scale barrages are no longer needed, MRLS range of 70 kilometres and can hit within 10 meters of its target. Tunnelling no longer really happens. Attacks are now down to company strengths (120 men) and even lower. There are more tactics focused on the lower levels such as platoon level(30 men), sections(10 men) even fire teams(5 men). Where as before mass infantry attack were the tactic at the time, hundreds of thousands of men in one attack. This is my own knowledge. Large scale manoeuvres still happen but less regularly. With modern weaponry war is now safe for the modern solder, body armour, more accurate weapons, better medical facility's, casualty evacuation teams, better transport, better infantry support weapons(machine guns, tanks, vehicles, aircraft, drones, missiles, artillery). This also goes against the modern soldier so it’s a double edged sword.

My audience and magazine over view Soldiers Age 18-50 Interested in information to do with the armed forces. Gender would be both male and female. The magazine is more casual but has parts where it can be serious. These parts tend to do with facts such as weapons statistics and explanations of battle drills or exercises. The magazine uses a lot of photos to accompany the articles. This focus on the power of photos allows for the articles to be very visually pleasing.

My first layout: This is my abandoned layout as I did not base this off any existing layout. This meant that it was messy and would look unprofessional. I was advised to base my spread on an existing one to have a better result.

My basis for my current design

Changes This is the final design for my double page spread. I chose this version as it allows for more focus on images. But with the article columns on either side giving this a bordering effect. I have also chosen in a further change made a white border around the photos.

Changes: Final layout

This was the first variation of my front cover it was when I focused on a different topic for my article. When I decided to change topic I was it fitting to change the front cover also. This software is called Adobe Photoshop CS6. This software is perfect for what I am doing as it allows me to modify images. I have used this software to create my front page. As you can see I have used a main picture and added words to the piece to create the front cover.

Changes: Final layout This is my final layout for my front cover. This one has also been made in Adobe Photoshop CS6. This final product includes both the world war 1 aspect of my article and the modern. This by the incorporation of a silhouetted WW1 soldier and a modern soldier silhouetted. The sunshine silhouetting the SOLDIER title makes it standout. I also faded the WW1 soldier as this gives it a more visual appealing aspect.

Software The software I used to create my double page spread was Adobe InDesign CS6. This is due to the fact that is allows me to best layout the article and photos like a double page spread of a magazine or newspaper. It also allows fro me to edit every aspect of the spread and layout allowing for the best results. The software I used to create my front cover was Adobe Photoshop CS6. This software allows for the detailed editing of photos. This is well suited to what I needed to as the front cover of magazines are images with writing on top. The ability to combine images and create a different image with them has allowed me to create the front cover I desired. Both these software’s have allowed for me to create the final product of a front cover and a double page spread to a high standard.

Jobs in industry For this publication I believe that a photojournalist would be one of the best jobs. A photojournalist is a journalists who's role it is to capture events in photographs for news outlets. For this they have to have the knowledge to be able to use the equipment, edit the photographs and to layout the images in a presentable way. The main piece of equipment they will use is a camera. They will have to know how to focus the camera, zoom, change shutter speed, use burst mode and much more. This will come from training and practice. They will then have to edit their photos, for this they will use a software such as Adobe Photoshop CS6. This will allow them to edit their photos to a high standard. Their pay grade varies from company to company.

Evaluation of project This project has been a mix of easy and difficult due to me having to adapt and learn thigs on the go as well as applying my prior knowledge. An example of this is the WW1 soldier on my front cover. I originally did not know how to fade it so I had to play around with different settings to eventually do it. I also had to ask for help to find this out. My primary research came from my own knowledge of the armed forces along with speaking with a friend of mine in the armed forces who must remain anonymous.Due to it being against the law to speak to journalists without permission I have implanted his information in the article but not given him credit.

Evaluation of front cover My front cover has turned out really well I believe. I had difficulty at first using Adobe PhotoShop CS6 as I had to learn certain things on the go. I had to learn how to fade pictures as I required this for the WW1 soldier. I found generally that my front cover caused me less problems then my double page spread as it was not as difficult to create. The title font and size is the only set feature about the front cover on all editions. I was very lucky to find the exact font on PhotoShop so the title is exactly the same as on the real publication.

Evaluation of double page spread. This part of the project caused me the most trouble. The first problem was that I foolishly tried to create a spread without a template. This ended up with the first design that did not go far. I then used common sense and used a template from the publication I am replicating. This then ended up helping me create the final layout. I had to layout the article columns on either side of the centred photos and make sure the writing was a reasonable size. The photos as well overlapped so I had to make sure they did not look messy so I made sure they was uniform and smartly laid out. Writing the accompanying article to the layout was a time consuming task as I had to first write the article with all the needed information and then proof read it. In conclusion this was less difficult then when I made my first double page spread but it still had its challenges.
