Common Core State Standards Implementation Toolkit for Teachers Teachers, parents, school and district administrators, and most importantly, students, need to be prepared for the implementation of the Common Core State Standards. This toolkit is designed to provide you with the tools you need to get started.

Toolkit Overview Audience oriented Collaborative effort A resource, not a requirement The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Toolkit is a process and resource guide to Aid administrators in implementing the Common Core in their school or district, Aid teachers in implementing the Common Core in their classrooms, and Prepare parents and students for the increased expectations that the Common Core brings. The toolkit was developed in response to requests from Oregon educators and has been a collaborative effort. Resources included in the toolkit have been contributed by ODE, as well as ESDs, districts, Oregon teachers on special assignment (TOSAs), and other states that have adopted the CCSS. The toolkit is process oriented, as opposed to the main audience web pages which are information oriented. The goal of the toolkit is to take the materials on the resource pages and present them in a way that provides context on HOW they might be used. A graphic has been designed that shows the four phases of the process presented in the toolkit: Awareness, Transition, Implementation, and Monitor & Modify.

Teacher Toolkit – Mathematics There are two toolkits provided for teachers: one for ELA & Literacy and the other for Math. The toolkits are split by subject not only to accommodate the unique structure of each, but to make it easier for teachers to access both sets of materials. The teacher toolkits are organized around what are called the “Six Shifts.”.These shifts describe what is required to assure alignment to the CCSS in terms of materials and classroom instruction. You can navigate between shifts by using the menu on the right hand side of each page. The menu also allows you to navigate between the math and ELA toolkits.

Toolkit Organization Every shift has its own page Resources for all phases are included for each shift For each Shift a series of “TO DOs” are provided, organized by phase. This means that for any given Shift teachers will find resources related to all phases. As of Spring 2012, the toolkit contains resources for the Awareness and Transition phases only. Resources for the Implementation phase are anticipated to be available beginning in Fall 2012. The purpose of this toolkit is to aid teachers in implementing the Common Core in their classrooms. With that in mind, many of the resources included in this toolkit are designed to help teachers develop a deeper understanding of each Shift and apply what they have learned to their classrooms.

Awareness & Dissemination Toolkit Highlights Awareness & Dissemination Video Segments Excerpts from Appendices The first phase of the toolkit involves building awareness and understanding. Stakeholders who understand how the Common Core benefits them, including the kinds of changes they can expect to see over time, will not only be stronger partners, but better prepared to assist with implementation.

Highlights - Videos In the Awareness phase, the toolkit provides videos specific to each Shift. These brief videos provide introductions to each Shift and describe their purpose and importance.

Highlights – ELA & Literacy Appendices Appendix A – Research Supporting the Standards Appendix B - Exemplar Texts and Sample Tasks Appendix C - Samples of Student Writing Resources from the appendices that accompany the CCSS are also included in the phase. ELA & Literacy teachers can explore sample texts and tasks at their grade level or content area from Appendix B and review samples of student writing that meet or exceed the standards from Appendix C.

Highlights – Math Appendices In math, high school teachers have the opportunity to examine Appendix A which provides guidance on designing high school mathematics courses aligned to the Conceptual Categories in grades 9-12 of the CCSSM.

Transition Toolkit Highlights Module 1 Sessions Study the Standards at Your Grade Transitioning to the Common Core State Standards is more than just replacing one set of standards with another. It is an opportunity for schools and districts to think about what and how they teach and to purposefully plan for student success. Resources found in the Transition phase of the toolkit are focused on helping teachers dig deeper into the standards.

Highlights – Module 1 Highlight #1 - a series of training sessions known as “Module 1.” Developed in collaboration with the NW Regional Comprehensive Center, these introductory modules in ELA & Literacy and Math are designed to assist K-12 teachers and leaders in building initial understanding of the Common Core State Standards. Each of the 45-minute sessions includes a Facilitator’s Guide, a PowerPoint presentation, and handouts for session activities.

Highlights – Studying Standards Highlight #2 - detailed analyses of the standards developed by Delaware (ELA & Literacy) and Arizona (math). These grade-level documents "deconstruct" the standards, one standard at a time, providing explanations and examples. By examining these materials at their grade, teachers can get a better picture of what the standards expect of them as well as their students.

Implementation Resources What’s Next? Implementation Resources Video examples of instruction Planning templates Sample lessons/units More resources for Literacy in content areas One of the benefits of the CCSS is that many states are working toward implementation at the same time. As a result, we can draw from the work being done across the country to support implementation in Oregon. For teachers, the toolkit is expected to expand to include examples of instruction, both in the form of video demonstrations as well as lessons and units aligned to the CCSS. Additionally, we hope to include resources to support teachers in implementing the literacy standards within content areas other than ELA and math.
