Welcome to AS/A Level D&T Product Design By the end of this course you will: AQA Product Design is a 2 year A Level course that enables students to Design and Make creative Products to solve real life problems and fulfil design needs. You will study historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic influences on Design and Technology and put their learning into practice by designing and making products. Be able to apply your designing and making skills to develop innovative and creative products of your own. Use a wide range of materials and processes to produce products of high quality Be able to think like a designer, seeing life in terms of design problems and solutions and understand how Product Design can be applied in the real world.

Course Content Product Design  The structure is as follows: Year 12 builds up students’ knowledge and understanding of Materials, Components and their Application. As well as being an opportunity to design and make a product of your own. A2 teaches students about the Design industry, the Market influences that Designers must consider and the industrial processes involved. Again there is a major Design and Make coursework Project. Through this Students will develop an understanding of what it is like to be a designer and should develop skills useful for employment and higher education. How am I assessed? 50% Coursework (1 Year 12 Project and 1 Year 13 Project) 50% Externally Examined (1 Year 12 Exam and 1 Year 13 Exam.) 30% Technical principles and 20% designing and making principles with 15% of the marks in the exam assessing mathematical skills in the context of design and technology. Requirements Product Design Course Requirements College entry requirements C grade in GCSE Product Design What skills are needed? Written and analytical skills Creativity and graphical skill Problem solving and lateral thinking skills Practical skills using workshop equipment and materials The ability to critically analyse and evaluate products The ability to take responsibility for the completion and time management of a Design Portfolio Expectations and workload 3 internal formal assessments completed per academic year plus 10 interim assessments. Ongoing coursework expectation outside of lessons every week as well as ongoing theory and revision tasks Independent Study & Ability to want to further own knowledge and practice through wider reading and analysis Wider awareness of Design Issues and new technology and trends Intrinsic interest in creative & innovative design to solve real life problems
